NGA – Signage & Wayfinding

The National Gallery, established more than 40 years ago is Australia’s national visual arts institution dedicated to collecting, sharing and celebrating art from Australia and the world.
Based in the nation’s capital, the Gallery sits on the southern shore of Lake Burley Griffin, on the lands of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples, and within Canberra’s Parliamentary Triangle. Our heritage listed building, designed by award winning architect Colin Madigan AO, is a beacon of experimental design and exemplary Brutalist architecture.
In 2024 the NGA embarked on a rebrand with Studio Ongarato in order to create an improved customer experience. A stunning suite of wayfinding signs was developed, complimenting the architecture seamlessly. 8th Wonder was engaged to prototype and then deliver new signage and wayfinding across the site.
The wayfinding was designed to provide an intuitive yet easy to navigate path for visitors to capture the enormous collection of exemplary art within the gallery. The result is a modern yet effective system enabling those to focus on exhibitions and permanent displays with ease.
